Meet Agilia – Printing That Goes Beyond the Edge
Some cards are easy. Standard, smooth, flat PVC – no problem for most printers. But real-world cards aren’t always so cooperative: chips that create bumps, uneven surfaces, or premium finishes that demand more than a direct-to-card printer can give. That’s where the Evolis Agilia comes in. Agilia uses retransfer printing technology – instead of printing straight onto the card, it prints onto a film first, then fuses that film onto the card under heat. The result is a flawless, edge-to-edge finish on almost any card material, no matter how demanding the surface.
When printing on technology cards like RFID, Mifare, HID, etc., we find that normal thermal printers cannot print over the chip area without leaving a blotch or spot. This is normal due to the heat application process and the milling of the space in the card centre; the thin PVC covering layer above the chip sags into the milled opening where the chip is inserted as it expands under the heat.
Remember that the heat transfer happens 5 times (YMCKO) with the 4 different colour panels and the protective coat. This prevents physical contact between the area and the printhead, allowing the ribbon colour to be transferred correctly. With Evolis Agilia, the card is printed fully on a film first and then rolled/fused onto the card at a different temperature, and this only happens once. The result is perfectly printed cards every time.
Retransfer Technology: Prints Beyond the Edge
- 600 dpi printing resolution (23.6 dots/mm) – genuinely high-definition output
- Full edge-to-edge coverage, even over embedded chips or uneven card stock
- Colour profile adjustment for accurate, consistent colour reproduction
- Compatible with an unusually wide range of card materials: PVC, composite PVC, PET, ABS, and polycarbonate, including cards from 30 to 50 mil thick
If your card program includes anything other than plain, flat PVC, Agilia is built to handle it without compromise.
Security You Can See – and Some You Can’t
Agilia doesn’t just print a pretty card. It gives you tools to make that card genuinely hard to fake:
- Microtext and guilloches -fine-detail security patterns that are extremely difficult to replicate
- High-definition QR codes for verification at the point of use
- Optional electromechanical locking system to protect access to blank cards and consumables
- Compatible with the lamination module for varnish, patches, or custom holograms
- Sensitive data erasure from printer memory as standard
Built for Real Throughput
- Up to 150 cards per hour single-sided in colour, 100 cards per hour double-sided
- 200-card feeder and 100-card hopper as standard – one of the larger capacities in the Evolis range
- Option to load cards one at a time for smaller, ad-hoc runs
Software & Setup
Agilia comes with ID-ALL Starter Edition card design software and runs on Evolis Premium Suite 2 (Windows and Mac, Linux on request). A 3.5″ colour LCD touchscreen with QR-code-linked help, guides day-to-day operation, and printing from smartphones or tablets is supported via the Evolis Print Service app.
Reliability That Stands Out
Here’s the detail worth highlighting: Agilia’s printhead carries a lifetime warranty, on top of a 3-year printer warranty (extendable by a further year). That’s a strong signal of how much confidence Evolis has in this machine’s retransfer engine.
Where It Shines
- High-security ID and access cards where anti-fraud features matter
- Cards with embedded chips or uneven surfaces that direct-to-card printers struggle with
- Premium membership, banking-style, or government-style cards where finish quality is non-negotiable
- Any application where double-sided, edge-to-edge print quality is the priority over raw speed
